Amy Kuney
Thinking back to when you were relocated from Oklahoma to Honduras for 6 years, do you feel that if that move had not taken place you would be the songwriter that you are today?
I know I wouldn’t be the songwriter I am today. Until I moved to Honduras, I really had nothing original to write about. Nothing exciting ever happened to me in Oklahoma. As soon as I moved to Honduras, my mind opened so much and I gained a wealth perspective and a wealth of topics to write about.
Since your debut release in 2006, you have experienced a whirlwind of press, including having New Music Weekly list you as one of the top 40 performing artists on international college radio, you opened up for Eisley, and even hit the road to tour. Has the way people are responding to your music become a bit overwhelming, or are you ready to see how deep the rabbit hole goes?
I am stoked to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. I love touching people with my music. I love that complete strangers can relate to me. It’s amazing to meet a stranger and have the ability to connect on a level that most people never get to; It’s romantic.
When can we expect the full length to come out, and who were the people behind the production and various instruments on this one?
Wow…There are a lot of people behind this one! Peter Barker (Engineer) has been working with me for the past 5 years now. Peter has a lot of faith in me, and having him there has really been a huge comfort and inspiration. Scott Seiver is producing the album. He is an unbelievably talented guy. My sister and her fiancé will be arranging and playing the wind and stringed instruments. My manager, Reese Lasher, is helping me with my image and my album concept. She is also helping me come up with creative ways to get my music “out there”. Lynn Lasher is acting as a consultant. She is the flame under this project; she keeps us on schedule- moving toward our goal. We are only in the pre-production mode right now so there will be more names to come! The album will be finished by April 20th and released by August 20th.
In your EP, I heard a lot of Ben Folds and Fiona Apple influence (which is not a bad thing at all), since your last release, who if anyone, can be added to the list of influential artists in your book?
I would add Jeff Buckley and Andrew Bird. Honestly, now I’m trying to listen to artists that have a very different sound than I do. I want to expand my range and to keep looking for ways to grow.
I read that you love to travel, being a touring musician, what are some of the most memorable places you have been?
The most memorable place I ever played was an Afghani Rodeo. Don’t ask…haha. Other memorable places were my hometown Tulsa Oklahoma, Houston, and Arizona. I love traveling, road tripping, eating gas station food - I love “roughing it”.
