Death By Stereo
This was an interview I was looking forward too. I've been a big Death By Stereo fan since I first heard Day Of The Death. So needless to say, I was pretty nervous about interviewing them. I'd met Efrem a few months earlier after photographing their set at the The Galexy and he was a totally rad guy but the nerves still set it. But, before the interview Dan put my nerves at ease when he asked me to take my pants off getting stepping into their van for the interview.
Death By Stereo is a special band. Not retarded special but unique. They have an amazing sound and passion when performing live. They care about their fans and it shows. The band goes out of their way to talk with everyone and thank them. Currently Death By Stereo is in the studio finishing up their next album with producer Jason Freese and playing shows with bands like Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and Suicidal Tendencies.
LBM: First of all happy birthday, man!
Efrem: Thanks dude!
So what have you guys been up too?
Efrem: Writing a record.
Hows the album coming along?
Efrem: Really really really well! We're doing it with a guy named Jason Freese, who's producing it who's just fucking phenomenal. He plays for Green Day and his brother is Josh Freese the drummer. So it’s been fucking amazing, dude. Its insane!
Dan: He plays in random things like he plays for Jewel and Spoon. He does all kinds of session work. He's like a musical genius.
And you guys worked with Dr. 90210 and Eminem?
<everyone laughs>
Dan: Oh yeah yeah yeah!
Efrem: I'm surprised you watch those!
I can't get enough of those studio updates! So when can we expect to see the new album?
Dan: Hopefully Spring of 2008. We're hoping! It might be a little bit later though, since we don't have a label right now and don't know how long its gonna take or if there might be any set backs
Efrem: We're doing the record on our own and once its done we're gonna take it to some labels.
Dan: So that process might take a little longer then it would if we were just on a label.
You guys recently came back from Japan. How was that?
Efrem: Fucking phenomenal!
Dan: One of the best trips of our lives!
Efrem: Everyone we played for was fucking totally cool! It just raged.
Dan: Yeah, we played 3 shows in Tokyo and 3 shows in and around Osaka.
That video with Suicidal looked crazy!
Dan: That was a good time! Paul Minor came back and played one show with us. It was rad playing with Suicidal. It’s fucking always awesome playing with them. They're awesome guys. All totally cool and down to earth. It was fucking rad, in the end fucking Dean gives me his guitar and lets me play a solo!
Efrem: That was fucking rad dude!
Dan: That was like a dream come true! Like "Wow! I can't believe I actually played guitar for a little bit in Suicidal!" That was the time of our lives.
What can we expect tonight?
Dan: All the old guy bands.
Efrem: Yeah, ex epitaph bands.
Dan: We're gonna call it the Punk No Rama show. Ex-itaph Records.
Efrem: It’s gonna rage though.
Any crazy Christmas gifts you want this year?
Dan: I'd like a helicopter.
Efrem: I'd like one of those real dolls.
Dan: He want’s a male one though!
Efrem: Yeah, a male one preferably.
I heard of a guy who owned like 5 real dolls!
Dan: REALLY!? Dude, those are like 5 grand each aren’t they??
Efrem: That’s fucking knarly dude!
Dan: Where was his house? When are we going?
Efrem: We'll have a real doll party.
Dan: Just a bunch of real dolls in the Jacuzzi "What’s up?!" I guess a helicopter full of real dolls would be pretty rad.
Efrem: <laughs> A helicopter full of real dolls!
<everyone laughs>
Efrem: I want a real girl with fake black tits, that’s white
<everyone laughs>
Dan: I can't wait till that day comes!
