My American Heart
Age doesn’t necessarily denote musical prowess, but for My American Heart, a band who wrote their debut when most of the members were merely 16, making great music has only been augmented by three years of touring, practice and acquired knowledge. The San Diego fivesome’s dynamic, innovative second record reverberates with a sense of newfound wisdom and the sort of skill that comes only from that hard-earned experience, a reminder of how shockingly young the makers of the record actually are. The strikingly varied disc, metaphorically entitled Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather to denote the beauty that inherently lies in all things, soars from hooky, driving rock (“The Shake (Awful Feeling)” and “Boys! Grab Your Guns”) to introspective acoustic ballad (“Tired and Uninspired”) to expansive searches that reveal a whole new side of My American Heart (“Dangerous” and “Fantasy”). Soliman’s lyrics are noticeably more refined, spinning with clever turns of phrase and poetically-inclined verses- yet another gleaming facet of evident growth on the record. Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather is the result of six months of heavy
So you got a brand new record that came out a couple weeks ago. Can you tell me a little bit about it?
Matthew: Yeah, it's very diverse and its the perfect next step and a lot of good songs. We're really passionate about the songs and how they came out and really think that its the best thing we could have put out at this stage of our lives.
Larry: Yeah I think if we went in another month later, I don't think it would have been the same. What's awesome about it is that every song doesn't sound the same and it's a really diverse record and I think I flows really well. We're very proud of it!
Did you guys do anything differently on this record compared to the last one?
Larry: We had actually a plethora of time to write this record, compaired to the other one where we had no time to write. We had no idea, we had never been in a real studio before, we'd never worked with a producer and we actually had the idea, we knew who we wanted to go with, producer wise and it worked out great. We worked with James Paul Wisner who's worked with bands like Underoath, Dashboard Confessional and The Academy Is...
Did you guys feel a lot of pressure on this record?
Larry: We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. We're not that kinda band where its like "ok lets sell fuckin' 30 - 40,000 records the first week" We're not in a position where we can do that right now. We wanna be that band that just builds and builds and builds and I wanna be a bands that's around for like 20 years and I see it going that way because compaired to the last record this one I think we're migrating and evolving to a direction where we're really getting comfortable with playing and its awesome. so you know, pressure... the only pressure is the one we put on ourselves.
How has the internet impacted MAH?
Larry: Honestly, its kinda sad because now its almost more internet then it is physical now a days. I mean, its a great invention and its popped out some good bands and its definitely definitely definitely definitely helped us out so much. I mean we were on Taste of Chaos 2 years ago and nobody knew who we were. Then we were featured on the front page of myspace and we got 60 or 70,000 friends that week... something rediculous like that and it really really helped us so much! Myspace is a good tool, so is purevolume.
I heard you guys did something cool for your fans for the release of this new cd?
Matthew: yeah, we had a bbq the other day for our cd release where we invited a lot of fans to come out and just hang out, eat and play football. it was really cool. we enjoy actually hanging out with them and getting personal with them.
Any bands you look forward to seeing on Warped Tour?
Larry: Paramore, Circa Survive. I've never been a huge fan of Pennywise, but I wanna see what they're about. we're actually really good friends with Paramore and they never cease to amaze us. They just always step it up. They're an awesome band and awesome people too.
Any last words?
Larry: Thanks for checking us out and check out our latest record Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather!
