Paper Rival
"...not before smothering myself with brown mustard and relish"
Interview by: Eli Roberts
Eli: I'm sure you get this question all the time but, please let me know the method behind having two EP's out back to back (not that anyone is complaining, the music is amazing.
Patrick: Thank you. The first EP we made was called the Thieves EP. Most people don't know that it exists because it is only available digitally. We made it under a different band name before we were ever signed to a label. When we eventually signed our deal, we were informed that we could no longer use that band name and were forced to find a new one. We released the Paper Rival EP to slowly introduce ourselves with our new name. We didn't want to release a full length recording completely out of nowhere.
When can we expect a full length?
Our full length is coming out on May 20th. It is called Dialog.
I see you are hitting the road pretty hard, what's the most random thing that has happened so far?
We were on our way to Greenville, SC when our old drummer ran our van out of gas roughly 1 mile away from the exit we needed to take. So Brent and Cody walked to the exit to buy gas while the rest of us stayed behind. While we were waiting, we noticed traffic starting to pile up in an unnatural way. Out of concern, Jake and I walked in the direction of the exit to see if we could find out what was causing the traffic. Once we got about half way, we saw Brent and Cody standing next to an Explorer that was turned upside down. It turns out that the woman driving the Explorer got distracted by Brent and Cody on the side of the road and flipped her vehicle right next to them. I'm not sure I did the story justice, but it was scary for the two members that bought the gas. Pretty random.
What's the one thing you want your fans to walk away with after a paper rival show (and please don't say merch)
I suppose I want them them to walk away with the memory of hearing some songs they like performed well.
If you were a hotdog, would you eat yourself?
I would if I were starving. But not before smothering myself with brown mustard and relish.
If you had to choose 5 early 90's songs to cover, what are they and why?
That's a tough one to answer. I've been thinking for the past ten minutes and the only song I can come up with is Pacing the Cage by Bruce Cockburn from the mid 90s. I know it's a copout because we actually did cover that song. With that being said, it is now easier to answer the "why" portion of the question. Pacing the Cage is a song that we all agreed held a lot of water lyrically not only with us as individuals, but our families as well.
