PlayRadioPlay

PlayRadioPlay’s highly anticipated EP The Frequency hit stores back in April. Seventeen year-old Texan, Dan Hunter is the ‘poptronica’ genius behind PlayRadioPlay, which has already hit one million plays on MySpace and opened for Fall Out Boy all in the space of a single year. And one short month later fans found him on tour with some of the biggest names in music on The Vans Warped Tour. Play Radio Play is often compared to Postal Service and The Smashing Pumpkins, the songs are like the soundtrack to your dreams. On the surface they’re like cupcakes - sweet, cute and just bursting with pure happiness. But if you listen carefully to what this blissfully gentle voice is singing on songs such as “Bound To Get Caught” and “Compliment Each Other Like Colors”, you’ll discover a darker dimension to Dan’s music. It’s this diverse combination of sound and subject that gives his music depth and realness. It’s what makes Play Radio Play stand out from everyone else.

Tell me a little about Play Radio Play.
Dan: I started it probably 2 years ago. I started palying music when i was a freshmen in high school. I just graduated high school a few days ago. Played in bands and stuff when i was a sophmore. Then when I was a junior I started a solo project and started playing music by myself and that ended up turning into play radio play. And when I was a senior, I kinda started getting recquinized by label and stuff and I got signed and thats kinda where I'm at now. Thats kinda the story in a nut shell.

You just released the new EP?
Yeah! Its a 6 song ep and um... I recorded and produced all the songs myself just at my house and they're all kinda done in different periods of time cause I've kinda been like evolving as a songwriter at a pretty fast rate compaired to a lot of people. So I mean the songs like on that one are kinda all dancey but um they're all from like different periods of you know the few years that i was doing things myself. So its kinda like a combination of all the stuff I've been doing myself and um, I'm doing a full length right now with Garrett Lee who's done Snow Patrol and U2, Block Party and uh, some other people... and it sounds a lot better, the productions a lot better, its a lot more mature. Its still fun and dancy

Hows LA treating you?
I don't really like Los Angeles too much. <laughs> but i mean... well I dunno... I guess I don't like Hollywood. Its the place I really don't like. I don't really like big cities... which is where we play shows all the time. <laughs>

I read in your blog you had lunch with Avril Lavine?
<laughs> Yeah, one of the producers I'm working with, Dr. Luke is the guy that wrote Girlfriend you know like <sings> "HEY HEY YOU YOU I CAN BE YOUR GIRLFRIEND!" that song you know? Its like huge! Yeah, he wrote that song and he produced that stuff and so he works with her a lot and uh, I was in the studio with him and um, we went out to eat with her and she's pretty cool

Hows it like working with producers now as opposed to writing on your own?
I think producers have kinda pushed me to write songs you know, on a more mature level and um kinda like finetune like the things I'm good at and you know, start working on the things that I'm not good at, like arrangments. I'm really bad at arrangments, so I think you know I'm working with Lester Mendez who's done like Shakira, Enrique Iglesias and um like Santana and he's amazing at like arrangments so i'm like learning a lot from people and its nice not doing it on my own but I'm still producing a good amount of it as far as just sounds and stuff. Its not vastly different from what I've been doing, so the kids that like Play Radio Play now will still like it, but I think they'll see more maturity

Any of the old songs gonna be on the new full Length?
Yes! Matty, Decipher Reflection, and some other songs have all been remade for the full length and they all sound a lot better.
