Your Majesty
"Billy Joel, but with balls"
Interview by: Sam Westre
Sam: You and Joe were previously in Driving By Braille. A band I actually loved back in the day. When did you guys decide to start doing Your Majesty.
David: When everyone kept quitting. We finally decided to just start from scratch about a year ago. Plus I had the crazy idea to stop playing guitar and play piano and sing. Then Joe could move over to guitar.
I noticed Driving by Braille still has a myspace page. Have we heard the last of that band or will we get to hear any unreleased stuff?
My next project is to actually release all the songs we were recording when everything fell apart. There were about 12 songs that never saw the light of day, so hopefully when we get some down time we they will.
So, who are the other shmucks in Your Majesty. Where did you find them? Were they playing in bands before this?
Well we're actually coming up on our one year anniversary. Joe was playing guitar in a band with Josh called Post Reality. We asked him to try us out, and he did. Then we started having girls ask strangers at bars if they played bass. The first guy we asked was Sam. It was love at first sight. Probably because him and Josh look identical.
I hung out with you at the continental about a month ago and a patron at the bar discribed your sound as "Billy Joel, but with balls". Would that be a pretty accurate discription?
Yeah sure I guess. I hope not in looks, but I am actually working on Piano man 2, so maybe someday everyone will think that. I mean i guess he did sell a few records so maybe that's something to shoot for. Although i see myself more as an Elton than a Billy. Or maybe a Freddy.
So your first release has just come out. Can you tell me a little bit about the album? Has it been in the making for a while or was it written pretty quickly.
Well you never really know how long a recording is going to take. When its the band's first it can take as long as you want. I think we got it done really quick and working with Joe Holiday was a great experience. I think he had a good idea of where everything was going from the beginning.
You guys recorded with Joe Holiday and Michael Anderson from Sixteen 14 Tokyo. What was it like working with these 2 guys.
Great. Michael and Joe kept us in line and on track. We really can't wait to do more work with them.
Where can i pick up the new EP?
It should be on iTunes soon, and we'll be working on getting it in stores in March. Right now its only available on Myspace.
I cought a show YM played with Nico Stai a while back and was blown away! When can we expect to see you guys on stage again?
We're playing March 5th at club Moscow in Hollywood. Then our record release party will be sometime in March at the Continental Room in Fullerton. Hopefully going up north in June. We will definitely let LBM know.
So you've been playing in bands for a while now... any moments that stand out in your mind (either funny or weird) that you'd like to share with the world wide web?
Well watching the curtains open at the house of blues was pretty amazing. Getting our equipment locked up at the Roxy was fun. Riding around in a van that had no back seats. We've pretty much all made out with the same girls by now. Watching each other puke. You know the usual.
Are backstage activites really as crazy as they were in the 80's? The craziest thing I ever saw from my days of playing, was the guitar player from Fingertight dropping salsa on his shirt.
Wow that's a lot crazier than any of our backstage experiences. Other than when we had an orgy with a bus full of nuns. But yeah ask us in a year and hopefully we'll have more to share.
